Help stop the Spread…

I realize that many times, a person infected with a stomach virus is contagious before they know they are sick so they are sure to unknowingly infect others. What I don’t get is the number of individuals who will “fight through it” and go to work while they are sick, or send their child off to school after they vomited their breakfast.

Maybe the public is just unaware that they are still contagious even after the vomiting has stopped, for as long as 2-3 days. That means if you (or your child) has been ill, you shouldn’t resume normal activities until minimum 24 hours, preferably 72. What people also may not realize is that the virus lives in the vomit and feces of an infected person. If you take your sick child out to run a few errands and said child vomits in the middle of the grocery store, you have all but guaranteed that many of the people around you will wind up getting sick. Now at this point you may be thinking “big deal” and you’re right in many cases it isn’t a big deal. BUT to the mother quickly picking up some crackers for her daughter who is going through chemotherapy, it IS a big deal. To the middle aged couple with their frail 91 year old parent, it IS a big deal. To the young woman beside you who underwent open heart surgery 3 weeks ago, it is a VERY BIG DEAL.

Please, please, please, keep your kids home if they are sick. If you’re sick, stay home. Don’t go out and spread the infection to everyone else.

Time Flies

April is half over. CRAZY! We are in the process of several home renovation projects. Refinishing furniture, new floors and now the garage door. I am the queen of starting projects and not finishing them. This week I have been stripping the garage door and let me tell you it was far more work than I had anticipated! I think it is almost ready to prime, I just have to fix a few rotten spots first. The kids have been fantastic, helping me and not getting in the way.Too much…

Natalie has a loose molar and it is really bothering her for some reason. We’ve never had that issue before, I’m not too sure what is going on. Luckily she just had a dentist appointment, so I am not worried that their is anything wrong.

Crazy tax procrastination. I hate doing our taxes. Two weeks til the deadline and I still haven’t even purchased the software. Luckily our returns are fairly simple and can be completed in a day. Maybe I’ll start next week.

I’m all over the map tonight. Time for tea then bed. Night all!

Are We Out of our MINDS?!

We are contemplating a kitchen reno. Not a full fledged pull everything out reno, mind you, but still a fairly large scale face lift. We’re looking at a new ceramic floor, paint, refinishing the table and chairs, new lighting, and decorative backsplash. The reason I am doubting my sanity is because we are considering doing all the work ourselves. HMMM… Considering that we are polar opposites in almost every way, it could be a recipe for disaster. Add to that we are both impossibly stubborn.  I have a marriage counselor on speed dial, should the need arise!

We went to Lowes yesterday and what started as a quick trip turned into a 2 hour marathon, trying to decide on the perfect tile combination (did  I mention we are polar opposites?) Seriously what I love he hates and vice versa! We did manage to find a combination that we both liked that won’t totally break the bank. Now we are researching the best way to go about tearing out the tiles and lino we currently have. We are also sifting through a mountain of paint chips, contemplating which shade of cream will best match the cupboards.

It should be an interesting ride, that’s for sure!

Remembrance Day 2009

I was watching the a Remembrance Day Ceremony on our local station, and learned that only 81% of Canadians support the observation of Remembrance Day.

REALLY, only 81%? Are you kidding me? Do the other 19%  ( Approx 6,329,163 people) not enjoy the freedom that we enjoy each and every day? Do they not enjoy the PEACE we are fortunate enough to have in our country? Some may say that 81% isn’t bad, but personally I am appalled. I am so thankful for all the men and women who fought and continue fighting for the beliefs and ideas on which CANADA was founded.

One day a year hardly seems sufficient to thank veterans who willingly left their family and friends, put themselves in harms way so for not only Canadians, but citizens of repressed countries like Afghanistan. I am teaching my children to respect and honour war veterans, and to be grateful for their sacrifices. I am proud that our school is teaching our children about Remembrance Day & our veterans.

So to all our Canadian Veterans and Troops, Thank you. I stand behind you. I believe in you, and I appreciate what you have done and are doing.

Long Day!

Just a quick post tonight as I am exhausted. Nicholas and I went down to the only H1N1 clinic in the city today to get vaccinated. We waited and waited and waited. It was awesome how they made everyone wait outside in the cold and rain. I guess they were worried about all those germs in an enclosed space. Good thinking guys. The best part was waiting only 40 minutes, then getting and actual appointment time. “Go Home” they said. “Come on back between 1 and 1:30, you’ll be in and out in a jiffy.” I would hate to see what their idea of a long wait would be. We got to wait another 2 hours and 40 minutes, most of that out in the rain when we came back for our appointment. THAT was super fun! What a great way to bond and spend time with my child. I’m glad the phat cats at the health unit spent all that time planning so I could have such a fantastic day with Nicholas. I’ll have to write a thank you note.

Whew, I feel a bit better. Anyhoo, today was a disaster, but Nicholas and I both got vaccinated. He only said ow twice, and gave me the most indignant look. And we made the front page of the paper. Yay. I’m going to go make myself a drink .

Or two!

What …October Already!

Okay, this is insane! I feel like September blew by and now October is almost over.

Natalie is settled nicely into school, she loves her teacher, Mrs. S, and her best friends are in her class as well, so double bonus. She is also estatic that her other best friend, who is a year younger  has now graduated to the big kids yard, so they can all play together.

Nicholas has been going to a playschool program and he absolutely loves it. I was taken completely off guard by how well he listened, right from the start. He now asks multiple times a week to go to preschool.

I am taking Karate (FINALLY) I decided the timing would never be perfect, so I’ve committed myself to 2 days a week and am loving it. The best part is I can bring the little man, and he just sits and watches!
